(3) 은혜 언약 (The Covenant of Grace)
구속 언약이 타락한 인간의 구원을 위하여 하나님께서 예수 그리스도와 세우신 언약이라면, 은혜 언약은 하나님께서 죄악된 인간들과 세우신 언약입니다. 은혜 언약은 구속 언약에 근거하여, 죄인들이 예수 그리스도를 믿음으로 말미암아 구원과 영생을 얻는 것입니다. 그러나 구원의 유일한 조건인 믿음까지도 하나님께서 값없이 거저 주시는 은혜의 선물인 것을 생각할 때(엡 2:8), 은혜 언약은 전적으로 하나님의 일방적인 은혜에 근거하고 있는 것입니다. ‘믿음이나 회개’라는 요소들이 은혜 언약의 공로적인 조건이 될 수 없는 것입니다.
행위 언약은(창 2:16-17) 언약을 이행할 의무와 책임이 인간들에게 주어진 반면에 은혜 언약은 그리스도 안에서 맺어진 언약이기 때문에 언약의 이행을 그리스도께서 보증하십니다. 인간들은 다만 은혜 언약의 당사자가 됨으로써 그리스도 안에서 영생이 보장되는 것입니다. 그러므로 은혜 언약은 행위 언약과 달리 무슨 조건이 요구되는 것이 아니고, 오직 뜻하신 자로 말미암아 값없이 거저 주시는 끝없는 사랑 위에 기초하고 있습니다(요 3:15). 실로, 하나님께서 그의 독생자 예수 그리스도를 아낌없이 내어 주실 정도로 일방적으로 베푸시는 먼저 사랑의 언약입니다(요일 4:9-10, 19). 은혜 언약은 구속사의 각 시대를 따라 다양한 모습으로 등장하고 있습니다.

The covenant of grace
While the covenant of redemption was made between God and Jesus Christ for the purpose of redeeming fallen mankind, the covenant of grace is made between God and fallen mankind. It is based upon the foundation of the covenant of redemption, in which sinners can find salvation and eternal life by believing in Jesus Christ. Considering that even faith in Christ--which is the sole requirement for salvation--is a free gift (i.e., grace) from God (Eph 2:8), we can conclude that the covenant of grace is entirely founded upon His unilateral grace. Neither our faith nor our repentance qualifies as the meritorious requirements for this covenant of grace.
In the covenant of works, men are given the task and obligation to carry out the covenant. However, because the covenant of grace is established in Christ, He is the One who guarantees to carry out the covenant. Humanity is merely a recipient under the covenant of grace through which eternal life is guaranteed through Christ. Thus, unlike the covenant of works, the covenant of grace requires no conditions, for it is laid upon the foundation of His boundless love, a gift freely bestowed through the One willed by God (John 3:15).
Indeed, the covenant of grace is the covenant of God's sovereign love that He bestows upon His people. This covenant of grace emerges in various forms throughout the history of redemption.
