횃불 언약의 내용

창세기 15장에서 하나님께서 아브라함과 체결한 횃불 언약은, 아브라함의 ‘자손’과 그들이 거할 처소인 ‘가나안 땅’에 관한 언약입니다.

(1) 자손에 관한 약속
횃불 언약은, 하나님의 구속사적 경륜을 담당할 경건한 자손의 선택과 번성을 약속하고 있습니다. 창세기 15:1-6에서는 하나님의 ‘자손’에 대하여 이렇게 약속하고 있습니다.

창세기 15:4-5 “여호와의 말씀이 그에게 임하여 가라사대 그 사람은 너의 후사가 아니라 네 몸에서 날 자가 네 후사가 되리라 하시고 5 그를 이끌고 밖으로 나가 가라사대 하늘을 우러러 뭇별을 셀 수 있나 보라 또 그에게 이르시되 네 자손이 이와 같으리라”

이것은 분명히 하나님의 나라가 아브라함의 후손을 통하여 건설될 것을 보여 주고 있습니다. 아브라함은 ‘후손’에 대한 약속을 믿음으로 하나님께로부터 ‘의’로 여기심을 받았습니다(창 15:6).

횃불 언약 이전의 구속사는 장차 하나님 나라의 백성을 형성하기 위한 ‘경건한 자손’ 한 사람을 찾는 과정이었고, 횃불 언약 이후의 구속사는 그 ‘한 사람’의 경건한 자손이 한 민족을 형성하고 온 땅에 충만하여 하나님 나라가 완성될 것을 말씀하고 있습니다(창 15:5). 한 개인과 한 가정을 통해 역사하시던 하나님의 구속사가 이제 한 민족을 통해 전 세계적으로 확대되는 전환점이 바로 횃불 언약을 통해서 이루어진 것입니다.

(2) 땅에 관한 약속
횃불 언약에는 하나님의 구속사적 경륜을 담당할 경건한 자손에게 가나안 땅이 주어질 것을 약속하고 있습니다(창 15:7-21).

창세기 15:7 “또 그에게 이르시되 나는 이 땅을 네게 주어 업을 삼게 하려고 너를 갈대아 우르에서 이끌어 낸 여호와로라”

창세기 15:13-21의 핵심 내용은, 아브라함의 자손이 이방의 객이 되어 400년 동안 괴롭힘을 당하다가 4대 만에 다시 가나안 땅으로 돌아오게 된다는 약속입니다.

이러한 횃불 언약의 구체적인 내용은 다음과 같습니다. 
첫째, 아브라함의 자손이 400년 동안 이방에서 객이 되어 괴롭힘을 받다가 큰 재물을 이끌고 나오게 될 것이라는 내용입니다(창 15:13-14). 
둘째, 아브라함이 개인적으로 장수하다가 평안히 조상에게로 돌아가 장사된다는 것입니다(창 15:15). 
셋째, 가나안 땅에 돌아오는 것이 4대(代) 만에 이루어질 것이라는 내용입니다(창 15:16). 
넷째, 애굽 강부터 큰 강 유브라데까지 이르는  가나나안 땅을 아브라함의 자손에게 주시겠다는 것입니다(창 15:18-21).

The Content of the Covenant

God’s covenant of the torch established with Abraham in Genesis 15 is a covenant concerning Abraham’s “descendants” and the “land of Canaan” where they were to dwell.

(1) The promise concerning the descendants

God’s covenant of the torch promises the election and prosperity of godly descendants who will accomplish God’s administration in the history of redemption. Genesis 15:1-6 deals with the promise concerning the descendants.

Genesis 15:4-5 Then behold, the word of the LORD came to him, saying, “This man will not by your heir; but one who shall come forth from your own body, he shall be your heir.” 5 And He took him outside and said, “Now look toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” And He said to him, “So shall your descendants be.”

This passage clearly illustrates how God’s kingdom will be established through Abraham’s descendants. Because Abraham believed in this promise of “descendants,” God attributed it to him as righteousness (Gen 15:6).

The history of redemption up until the covenant of the torch was about finding one “godly descendant” to establish the kingdom of God in the future. The history of redemption after the covenant of the torch establishes that the godly descendants of the “one man” will build a nation and fill the whole earth, so that God’s kingdom will be complete (Gen 15:5). Thus, the history of redemption that once worked through one individual and his family expanded to the scale of a nation and out to the entire world; such a turning point was made possible by the covenant of the torch.

(2) The promise concerning the land

The covenant of the torch promises that the land of Canaan will be granted to godly descendants who will carry out God’s plan of redemption (Gen 15:7-21).

Genesis 15:7 And He said to him, “I am the LORD who brought you out of Ur the Chaldeans, to give you this land to possess it.”

The message of Genesis 15:13-21 is the promise that the descendants of Abraham would become strangers in a foreign land where they would be oppressed for 400 years, and that they would return to Canaan in the fourth generation.

This is a detailed description of the covenant of the torch:

• First, Abraham’s descendants would become strangers in a foreign land where they would be oppressed for 400 years, but they would eventually come out with great possessions (Gen 15:13-14).
  
• Second, Abraham would be buried at a good old age and return to his fathers in peace (Gen 15:15).
  
• Third, the Israelites’ return to the land of Canaan would be accomplished in the fourth generation (Gen 15:16).
  
• Fourth, God outlined the boundaries of the land of Canaan-form the river of Egypt as far as the great river Euphrates-that would be given to the descendants of Abraham (Gen 15:18-21).
