야곱 130세, 요셉 40세
(2) 민족적 발전을 위한 조치
나라의 둘째 치리자였던 요셉은 이스라엘 백성이 목축업을 버리고 좀더 나은 직업을 가질 수 있도록 배려할 수도 있었습니다. 그러나 만약 이스라엘 백성이 이런 특혜를 받는다면 많은 애굽 사람들에게 질시를 받고, 경계의 대상이 되었을 것입니다.
그래서 요셉은 애굽 사람들이 목축업을 가증스럽게 여긴다는 사실을 이용하여, 자기 가족의 업이 조상적부터 대대로 ‘목축업’이었다는 사실을 애써 드러냄으로 애굽 사람들 눈에 전혀 거슬리지 않도록 만들었습니다. 그리하여 애굽 사람들의 눈에 이스라엘 백성은, 그저 힘 없는 약소 민족 정도로 인식되었을 것입니다.
이러한 요셉의 지혜로운 조치로 말미암아 이스라엘은 타국 땅에서 430년간이나 거주가 가능했습니다.
마침내 이스라엘 백성은 구별된 땅 ‘고센’에서 큰 민족으로 번성하여 갔습니다. 창세기 47:27에서는 “이스라엘 족속이 애굽 고센 땅에 거하며 거기서 산업을 얻고 생육하며 번성하였더라”고 말씀하고 있습니다. 실로 고센 땅은 하나님의 구속사적 경륜 속에서 이스라엘을 거대한 민족으로 성장시키기 위해 특별히 구별된 보호처였습니다.

(2) For the growth and advancement of the nation
Since Joseph was second-in-command in Egypt, he could have helped the Israelites change from keeping livestock to a more respectable occupation. However, if they had received such special treatment, the Egyptians would have looked upon them with jealousy of become suspicious of their intentions.
Thus, Joseph used the fact that livestock keepers were detestable to the Egyptians to his advantage, emphasizing that the Israelites had engaged in that occupation since the time of their ancestors so that the Israelites would not become a thorn in the side of the Egyptians. He made the Israelites look like a weak and small nation in the eyes of the Egyptians.
It was Joseph's wise dealings that allowed the Israelites to live in a foreign land for 430 years. In this "consecrated" land the Israelites grew and prospered, to Genesis 47:27 testifies, "Now Israel lived in the land of Egypt, in Goshen, and they acquired property in it and were fruitful and became very numerous." In reality, Goshen was an especially protected land; it was part of God's administration to allow the Israelites to grow into a large nation.
