야곱 147세, 요셉 57세

(3) 요셉을 통해 얻은 손자, 므낫세와 에브라임을 아들로 삼은 야곱

야곱은 인생의 황혼녘 결산을 하면서, 마지막으로 혼신의 힘을 다해 그 후손들에게 언약을 전수하였습니다. 이것은 언약의 계승자로서 ‘언약 전수’라는 마지막 사명을 수행하기 위한, 생의 최후 분투와도 같은 것입니다.

야곱의 믿음의 행위에 대한 기록은 많이 있습니다. 그러나 하나님께서는 그의 많은 믿음의 행위 가운데서 오직 두 가지만 선택하여 히브리서에 기록하셨습니다. 그 첫 번째가 요셉의 각 아들에게 축복한 것이요, 두 번째는 지팡이 머리에 의지하여 경배한 행위입니다. 둘 다 야곱이 임종의 순간에 행한 일입니다.

야곱이 병들어 죽음의 문턱에 섰을 때(창 48:1), 요셉은 부친의 병환 소식을 듣고 자기의 두 아들을 데리고 갔습니다. 이에 야곱은 “힘을 내어” 침상에 앉았다고 하였습니다(창 48:2). 거동하지 못할 정도로 쇠약해진 노인이었으나, 평소 사랑하는 요셉과 그의 두 손자가 찾아왔다는 소식에 야곱은 생기가 돌고, 정신이 되살아난 것 같습니다.

이 때 요셉을 향한 야곱의 첫 마디는, 가나안 땅 루스(벧엘)에서 나타나셨던 하나님께서 허락하신 복을 되새기면서, “이 땅을 네 후손에게 주어 영원한 기업이 되게 하리라”라는 것이었습니다(창 48:3-4).

그런 다음 야곱은 그의 손자인 므낫세와 에브라임을 아들로 삼겠다고 선언하였습니다. 야곱은 요셉의 두 아들을 르우벤과 시므온처럼 자신의 친아들의 반열에 올려 놓고(창 48:5), “이들 후의 네 소생이 네 것이 될 것이며”(창 48:6上), 그리고 “그 산업은 형의 명의하(名義下)에서 함께하리라”(창 48:6下)라고 하였습니다. 이것은 에브라임과 므낫세에게 완벽한 족장의 신분을 주어, 르우벤이나 시므온처럼 약속의 땅에 대한 상속권을 동등하게 부여해 준 것입니다.

이어서 야곱은 므낫세와 에브라임을 축복할 때 육신적 서열을 좇지 않고, 하나님의 뜻하신 구속사적 경륜에 따라 팔을 어긋맞겨 아우 에브라임에게 더 큰 축복을 빌었습니다(창 48:13-19). 요셉은 야곱의 오른손을 들어서 에브라임의 머리에서 므낫세의 머리로 옮기려고 했으나, 야곱은 “나도 안다 내 아들아 나도 안다”(창 48:19)라고 하며 차자인 에브라임에게 장자의 축복을 하였습니다.

그리고 야곱은 “나는 죽으나 하나님이 너희와 함께 계시사 너희를 인도하여 너희 조상의 땅으로 돌아가게 하시려니와”(창 48:21)라고 유언함으로, 그의 후손들에게 반드시 가나안 땅으로 돌아가야 한다는 것을 재삼 강조하였습니다.

참으로 야곱은 죽음 직전까지 사력을 다하여 그의 손자들에게까지 애굽의 고센 땅이 선민의 영주지가 아니고, 가나안만이 하나님께서 약속하신, 선민이 거주해야 할 땅이라는 언약 사상을 철저히 심어 주었던 것입니다.

(3) Jacob takes Ephraim and Manasseh, his grandsons, from Joseph and makes them his own sons.

As Jacob was putting closure to his life, he gathered his last strength to pass down the covenant to his descendants. As the one who had inherited the covenant, he felt that it was his final obligation to pass down the covenant. Hence, this was his last struggle to fulfill his duty.

There are many records of Jacob's acts of faith, but God selected two of them to be recorded in the book of Hebrews. First was his act of blessing Joseph's two sons, and second was his act of worship leaning on top of the staff. Both acts were carried out just before his death.

When Joseph heard that Jacob was sick and was about to die (Gen 48:1), he brought his two sons to him. At this time, Jacob collected his strength and sat up in the bed (Gen 48:2). He was old and could not easily move about, but when his beloved Joseph and his two sons came to Jacob, life was revived in him.

The first thing the Jacob said to Joseph as he thought back to God's blessings given at Luz was in regards to God's promise, "I will give this land to your descendants after you for an everlasting possession" (Gen 48:4). Then Jacob pronounced that he would take Joseph's two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, as his own sons, just as Reuben and Simeon were his (Gen 48:5). He added, "But your offspring that have been born after them shall be yours; they shall be called by the names of their brothers in their inheritance" (Gen 48:6). Jacob had just given Ephraim and Manasseh positions as patriarchs so that they may have equal rights to a portion of the Promised Land.

Next, Jacob did not follow the order of birth as he was blessing Ephraim and Manasseh. Instead, he crossed his arms, according to God's administration of salvation, and gave the greater blessing to the younger brother, Ephraim (Gen 48:13-19). Joseph attempted to uncross Jacob's arms and move his right arm from Ephraim's head to Manasseh's head, but Jacob refused, saying, "I know, my son, I know" (Gen 48:19), and blessed the younger with the blessing of the firstborn.

Then Jacob said, "Behold, I am about to die, but God will be with you, and bring you back to the land of your fathers" (Gen 48:21), emphasizing again how his descendants must return to the land of Canaan.

Until the very last moment of his life, Jacob planted the covenant faith into his grandsons: the land of Goshen was not a permanent location for the chosen people of Israel because the land of Canaan was their Promised Land.
