아브라함의 역사 - 6. 아브라함과 사라의 개명, 할례 언약

아브라함 99세, 사라 89세

하나님께서는 아브라함이 86세에 이스마엘을 낳은 이후 13년 동안 한 번도 나타나지 않으셨고 철저하게 침묵하셨습니다. 이것은 아브라함의 불신에 대한 하나님의 마음을 나타내신 것으로 이해할 수 있습니다.

마침내 하나님께서는 99세 된 아브라함에게 나타나셔서 “나는 전능한 하나님이라”(창 17:1)라고 선언하셨습니다. 히브리어로는 ‘아니 엘 샤다이’로, 이것은 ‘네가 지금까지 믿지 못하고 있지만, 나는 한 번 약속한 것은 아무리 불가능한 상황 속에서도 반드시 이루는 존재’임을 아브라함에게 상기시킨 것입니다.

전능하신 하나님께서는 아브라함에게 개명(改名)을 명하신 후, 할례 언약을 체결하셨습니다(창 17:9-14). 본래 이름 ‘아브람’에서 ‘아브라함(열국의 아비)’으로 개명되었습니다(창 17:5). ‘아브람’은 ‘고귀한 아버지’라는 뜻으로 개인적인 의미를 가지며, ‘아브라함’은 ‘많은 무리의 아버지’라는 뜻으로 공적(公的)인 의미를 가집니다. 이것은 장차 아브라함이 혈통을 초월하여 예수 그리스도를 믿는 모든 자의 조상이 될 것을 미리 보여준 것입니다(롬 4:16, 갈 3:7, 29).

이후에 하나님께서는 할례를 명령하셨습니다.
‘할례’(circumcision)는 히브리어로 ‘물로트’, 헬라어로 ‘페리토메’로서, 이스라엘 백성의  남자가 난 지 8일 만에 생식기 끝의 껍질을 베어 내는 예식입니다(창 17:12, 레 12:3, 눅 2:21).

창세기 17:10에서 “너희 중 남자는 다 할례를 받으라 이것이 나와 너희와 너희 후손 사이에 지킬 내 언약이니라”고 말씀하셨습니다. 이처럼 할례는 하나님의 백성이 되는 표이자(창 17:14), 언약을 준수하겠다는 표입니다. 더 나아가 하나님과 이스라엘 백성 사이의 ‘언약의 표징’으로서(창 17:11), 언약의 징표가 몸에 흔적으로 남아 있어 항상 하나님과의 약속을 상기하도록 하신 중대한 예식입니다(창 17:13).

이렇게 하나님께서는 아브라함에게 개명과 할례를 명령하신 후에, 바로 사라의 이름을 개명하시고 아들이 생길 것을 말씀하셨습니다(창 17:16). 아브라함의 아내는 본래의 이름 ‘사래’에서 ‘사라’로 개명되었습니다(창 17:15-16). ‘사래’는 ‘여주인, 나의 공주’라는 뜻으로, 단순히 한 가정의 여주인이라는 의미이지만, ‘사라’는 ‘열국의 어미’라는 뜻의 공적인 의미를 갖습니다. 이것은 구속사적으로 사라가 낳은 이삭을 통하여 예수 그리스도가 오시고, 예수 그리스도를 믿는 성도들이 많이 나타날 것을 예시하신 것입니다(갈 4:26, 31).

아브라함은 하나님께서 친히 할례 언약을 통하여 자손을 약속해 주셨음에도 불구하고, 자기에게 아들이 생길 수 없다고 생각하고 이스마엘이나 하나님 앞에 살기를 원한다고 하였습니다(창 17:17-18). 그러나 하나님께서는 “아니라 네 아내 사라가 정녕 네게 아들을 낳으리니 너는 그 이름을 이삭이라 하라 내가 그와 내 언약을 세우리니 그의 후손에게 영원한 언약이 되리라”(창 17:19)고 말씀하시면서, 이스마엘은 하나님의 언약의 성취할 자가 아니고 이삭만이 하나님의 언약을 성취할 자라는 것을 확실히 선포하셨습니다. 하갈이 낳은 아들 이스마엘도 열두 방백을 낳아 큰 나라가 되게 할 것이지만, "내 언약은 내가 명년 이 기한에 사라가 네게 낳을 이삭과 세우리라"라고 말씀하셨습니다(창 17:20-21).

하나님께서 아브라함과 말씀을 마치시고 그를 떠나 올라가셨습니다(창 17:22). 하나님께서 말씀하신 그날, 아브라함은 곧바로 자기에게 말씀하신 대로 할례를 시행하였습니다. "당일에" 아브라함 자신과 그 아들 이스마엘이 할례를 받았고, 그 집의 모든 남자(집에서 생장한 자와 이방 사람에게서 사 온 자)가 다  그와 함께 할례를 받았습니다(창 17:23-27).

God kept His silence and did not appear to Abraham for 13 years after Abraham became Ishmael's father at the age of 86. This can be understood as God's response to Abraham's unbelief.

At last, when Abraham was 99 years old, God appeared to him and proclaimed, "I m God Almighty" (Gen 17:1), ani- el sadday in Hebrew. This was a reminder that God would still fulfill His promise although Abraham did not believe, even in the most improbable circumstances.

God Almighty appeared to Abraham when he was 99 years old and gave him a new name before entering into the covenant of circumcision (Gen 17:9-14). God changed his name from Abram to Abraham, which means "father of a multitude of nations" (Gen 17:5). The name Abram has a meaning of "exalted father" with a nattow significance of an individual father. However, the name Abraham, which means "father of a multitude of nations," is more embracing and universal. This foreshadows how Abraham will become the father of all who believe in Jesus Christ without regard to their blood lineage (Rom 4:16; Gal 3:7, 29).

Then, God commanded the covenant of circumcision to Abraham. The word circumcision is mula in Hebrew and peritome in Greek. It refers to the Israelite practice of cutting off a male child's foreskin eight days after birth (Gen 17:12; Lev 12:3; Luke 2:21).

In Genesis 17:10 God commanded, "This is My covenant, which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: every male among you shall be circumcised." Thus, circumcision was a sign of becoming God's people (Gen 17:14) and their promise that they would adhere to the covenant. As proof of the covenant between God and the Israelites (Gen 17:11), the physical mark on the flesh was to serve as a constant reminder of the everlasting covenant with God (Gen 17:13).

After God renamed Abraham and instituted the covenant of circumcision, He renamed Sarai and said that she would have a son (Gen 17:16). Abraham's wife, whose original name was Sarai, was given a new name sarah (Gen 17:15-16). The name Sarai means "a woman of high rank" or "my princess," which pertained only to herself. However, the name sarah, which means "mother of nations," is more embracing of others. This act of renaming Sarai also foreshows God's redemptive plan to have Jesus Christ come in the line of Isaac, who will be born of Sarah, and that there will be many nations which will come to believe in Jesus Christ (Gal 4:26).

Although God Himself gave Abraham the promise of descendants through the covenant of circumcision, Abraham did not believe that he could have a son, and he confessed his wish for Ishmael to live before God (Gen 17:17-18). However, God clearly said, "No, but Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; and I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him" (Gen 17:19). He reconfirmed that He would fulfill His covenant only through Isaac and not through Ishmael.
