(3) 횃불 언약의 구속사적 의미
구약에 나타난 많은 언약들과 아브라함과 맺은 일곱 번의 언약 가운데서도 은혜 언약의 뜻이 가장 구체적으로, 명확하게 나타난 것이 바로 창세기 15장에 나타난 ‘횃불 언약’입니다. 하나님의 인류 구원 역사는 아브라함과 맺은 횃불 언약에 이르러 그 윤곽이 확연히 드러났습니다. 횃불 언약은 역사적으로는 이스라엘 나라의 회복의 뜻을 담고 있지만, 궁극적으로는 타락한 인류의 잃어버린 ‘땅’과 그 나라의 ‘백성’을 회복하시려는 구속사적인 중대한 뜻이 담겨 있습니다. 이 점에 대하여 신학자 에릭 사우어(Erich Sauer)는 그의 저서에서 말하기를 “구원사의 관점에서 볼 때, 이것은 구약에서 가장 중요한 언약 체결이다(창 15:9-18)”라고 하였습니다.
실로, 횃불 언약은 선민의 선택, 번성, 국가적 형성 그리고 그들이 거할 처소인 가나안 땅을 얻게 되는 하나님의 구속사적 경륜을 가장 명확하게 밝혀 주는 언약입니다.
그 이유는 크게 두 가지 면에서 나타납니다.
① 쪼갠 고기 사이로 ‘횃불’이 지나간 언약이기 때문입니다.
고대 중근동 지방에서는 중요한 계약을 체결할 때 계약의 당사자들이 많은 증인들이 보는 앞에서 짐승을 쪼개어 놓고 그 사이로 지나가는 풍습이 있었습니다. 이것은 일종의 맹세의 언약으로, 만일 누구든지 이 계약을 어기면 ‘이 짐승처럼 쪼개짐을 당해도 좋다’는 의미였습니다(렘 34:18-21). 그런데 하나님께서 아브라함과 언약을 체결하실 때 쪼갠 고기 사이로 ‘횃불’이 지나갔습니다. 이 횃불은 하나님의 임재를 상징합니다(출 13:21, 19:18, 20:18-20, 신 4:11-12, 5:23-24, 사 62:1). 곧 하나님께서 지나가신 것입니다. 이는 하나님께서 반드시 이 언약을 이루시겠다는 강한 의지를 담아 역설하신 것입니다.
② 하나님 나라 건설을 위한 가장 뚜렷한 약속이기 때문입니다.
구약의 많은 언약 가운데 하나님의 나라에 대한 가장 구체적인 내용을 담고 있는 것이 바로 ‘횃불 언약’입니다. 창세기 15:7에서는 “또 그에게 이르시되 나는 이 땅을 네게 주어 업을 삼게 하려고 너를 갈대아 우르에서 이끌어 낸 여호와로라”라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 하나님께서는 횃불 언약을 통하여 아브라함의 후손에게 반드시 가나안 땅을 주시겠다고 선언하셨습니다. 그리고 아브라함부터 4대 만에 가나안에 들어갈 것이라고 약속하시고(창 15:16), 가나안 땅의 경계까지도 정확하게 알려 주셨습니다(창 15:18).
횃불 언약은 단순히 혈통적인 아브라함의 자손에게만 해당되는 것이 아닙니다. 궁극적으로 예수 그리스도를 믿음으로 구원받은 영적 아브라함의 후손들에게도 해당되는 약속입니다(롬 9:7-8, 갈 3:7, 27-29). 하나님께서 아브라함과 그 자손에게 가나안 땅을 주시겠다고 ‘영영한 언약’을 세우셨다면(시 105:8-11), 그 언약은 오늘날 천국을 약속받은 성도들에게도 유효합니다.
그러므로 횃불 언약은 과거에 이미 지나가 버린 언약이 아니며, 하나님의 나라를 간절히 소망하며 예수 그리스도를 구주(救主)로 믿는 성도들을 통해서 최종적으로 성취되어야 할 중요한 언약입니다.

(3) The redemptive and historical meaning of the covenant of the torch
Of the numerous covenants in the Old Testament and the seven covenants established with Abraham, the covenant that most explicitly and vividly conveys the intention behind the covenant of grace is the one of the "flaming torch" found in Genesis 15. The divine history of salvation for all humanity becomes clearly outlined in the covenant of the torch which God established with Abraham. The covenant of the torch historically implies the restoration of nation of Israel, but it ultimately bears the great purpose in redemptive history of restoring fallen mankind's lost "land" and the "people" of that nation. Concerning this, Erich Sauer states, "From the point of view of the history of salvation this is the most significant covenant-making of the Old Testament(Gen. 15:9-18)."
Indeed, the covenant of the torch is the clearest manifestation of the administration of God in the history of redemption, which accomplishes the election of His people, their growth and the formation of their nation, and the possession of their dwelling place, the land of Canaan. There are two major reasons for this.
① It is a covenant established with a "torch" that passed between the pieces of the animals that were cut in two.
According to the Ancient Near Eastern customs of establishing a treaty(or covenant) around the fifteenth century BC, when the Pentateuch was recorded, the parties that are establishing the covenant must cut sacrificial animals in two pieces and pass between the pieces in front of many witnesses. This custom was carried out as an act of swearing an oath to keep the covenant, agreeing that whoever fails to keep the covenant will be cut into pieces like the animals (Jer 34:18-21).
A unique phenomenon that happened when God was making the covenant with Abraham is a flaming torch, which passed between the pieces of the animals. Since the torch symbolizes God's presence (Exod 13:21; 19:18; 20:18-20; Deut 4:11-12; 5:23-24; Isa 62:1), the party that passed between the pieces was God. This was an emphatic expression of God's will that He would certainly fulfill this covenant.
② It was definite promise concerning the establishment of God's kingdom
Of the many covenants in the Old Testament, the covenant that contains the most details concerning the kingdom of God is the "covenant of the torch." Genesis 15:7 states, "And He said to him, 'I am the LORD who brought you out Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to possess it.'" Through the covenant of the torch, God proclaimed that He would surely give the land of Canaan to Abraham's descendants. Additionally, God promised that they would enter Canaan in the fourth generation from Abraham (Gen 15:16), and God even delineated the boundaries of Canaan (Gen 15:18).
The covenant of the torch is not limited to the fleshly descendants of Abraham. Ultimately, it is promise given to all the spiritual descendants of Abraham-those who receive salvation through their faith in Jesus Christ (Rom 9:7-8; Gal 3:7, 27-29). If God established an everlasting covenant to give the land of Canaan to Abraham and his descendants (Ps 105:8-11), that covenant is still valid today for the believers who have received the promise of the kingdom of heaven.
Therefore, the covenant of the torch is not merely a covenant from the past. It is a covenant of great importance that will be finally accomplished through the saints who fervently hope for the kingdom of God and believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
