(2) 구속 언약 (The Covenant of Redemption)
구속 언약은 하나님께서 타락한 인간들을 구원하기 위하여 창세 전에 세우신 언약입니다(엡 1:4-5). 행위 언약을 지키지 못해 에덴에서 쫓겨난 인류의 회복을 위해서 하나님께서 성자 예수 그리스도와 언약을 맺으시고 그로 말미암아 성취시킬 것을 약속하신 것입니다. 말하자면 아담이 지키지 못한 행위 언약을, 예수님께서 대신 지키도록 하신 것입니다. 이것을 위해 성부 하나님께서 계약의 당사자인 예수 그리스도에게 요구하신 것이 있습니다.

첫째, 여자의 후손으로 오심으로 인성(人性)을 취하는 것입니다(창 3:15, 갈 4:4-5, 히 2:11-15).
실로, 인간이 범죄하고 타락하여 영원히 멸망 받을 운명에 처하게 되자 하나님께서는 그들을 그냥 버려 두지 않으시고(사 59:16), 여자의 후손을 통해 구원하실 것을 굳게 약속하셨습니다. 때가 차매(갈 4:4), 영원 전부터 아버지 품속에 계셨던 독생하신 하나님이(요 1:14, 18), 처녀인 마리아의 몸에(사 7:14, 마 1:23) 성령으로 잉태되어 ‘여자의 후손’으로 이 땅에 오셨으니, 그가 바로 ‘예수 그리스도’이십니다. 예수 그리스도께서는 인성을 취하심으로 신성과 인성의 인격적 연합을 이루셨습니다. 그는 지상에 계시는 동안 참하나님이시며 동시에 참사람(God-Man)이셨습니다.

둘째, 십자가에서 죄의 형벌을 지불함으로써 율법의 의를 충족시키는 것입니다(갈 3:10-13).
예수 그리스도는 죄인들의 죄를 지시고 그들이 받아야 할 형벌을 대신 받으심으로써 죄인들의 죄를 속하시는 일을 담당하셨습니다. 첫째 아담이 행위 언약을 지키지 못했기 때문에 예수 그리스도가 오셔서 십자가에서 피를 흘리심으로 율법의 의를 충족시키시고, 구속 언약의 요구를 확실하게 이루셨던 것입니다(히 7:22, 8:6).

결국, 성부 하나님께서는 예수 그리스도의 십자가에서 이루신 구속 언약의 실천에 근거하여 그에게 속한 성도들의 죄를 용서하시고, 의롭다고 인정하시는 은혜를 베푸시는 것입니다(롬 3:21-24). 그러므로 구속 언약은 은혜 언약을 성취시키기 위한 법적인 근거입니다.

The Covenant of redemption

The covenant of redemption is the covenant that God established from before the ages to save fallen mankind. To restore a humanity expelled from Eden because they could not keep the covenant of works, God entered into a covenant with Jesus Christ, the Holy Son, and promised to accomplish the covenant through Him. In other words, the covenant of works, which Adam could not keep, was now enacted through Jesus. To do this, God the Father required two things from Jesus Christ.

First, Jesus must put on the form of humanity by coming as the seed of the woman (Gen 3:15; Gal 4:4-5; Heb 2:11-15). When mankind faced eternal destruction because of their transgression and fall, God did not simply abandon them (Isa 59:16); He made a firm promise to save them through the seed of the woman. The one who came as the seed of the woman at the fullness of the time (Gal 4:4)-the only begotten Son who was in the bosom of the Father from before the beginning (John 1:14, 18) and was conceived by the Holy Spirit in the body of the virgin Mary (Matt 1:23; cf. Isa 7:14)-was indeed Jesus Christ.

By taking the form of flesh and blood, Jesus Christ achieved a hypostatic (personal) union of divinity and humanity. While He was on this earth, He was God-Man--the true God and true man.

Second, Jesus was to pay the penalty of sin on the cross, thereby satisfying the righteousness of the law (Gal 3:10-13). By bearing the transgressions of sinners and accepting their penalty on their behalf, Jesus undertook the work of atonement for their transgressions. Because the first Adam could not keep the covenant of works, Jesus Christ had to come and shed His blood on the cross, to fulfill the righteousness of the law and accomplishing the requirements of the covenant without fail (Heb 7:22; 8:6).

With the redeeming covenant that Jesus Christ has fulfilled on the cross, God the Father forgave the sins of the people who belong to Him and bestowed upon them the grace of justification (Rom 3:21-24). Therefore, the covenant of redemption is the lawful foundation for the fulfillment of the covenant of grace.
