아브라함의 역사 - 3. 횃불 언약의 체결

아브라함 84세, 가나안에 도착한 지 10년째(창 16:3)

창세기에 기록된 하나님의 언약 가운데 가시적이고 강렬한 이미지를 통하여 체결된 언약은 세 가지가 있습니다. 그것은 노아의 대홍수 후에 노아와 그 아들들에게 베푸신 ‘무지개 언약’과 야곱이 벧엘에서 받은 ‘사닥다리 언약’, 그리고 창세기 15장에서 아브라함과 맺은 ‘횃불 언약’입니다.

그 가운데 오직 횃불 언약에서만 언약의 증표로 ‘희생 제물’이 등장합니다(창 15:8-10). 이 희생 제사는 장차 인간의 몸으로 이 땅에 오셔서 택하신 백성들을 구원하시기 위한 속죄 제물로 드려질 예수 그리스도의 구속 사역을 예표하고 있습니다(요 1:29, 고전 5:7).

횃불 언약의 특징은, 하나님의 임재를 상징하는 ‘횃불’이 쪼갠 고기 사이로 지나갔다는 점입니다(창 15:17). 
당시의 일반적인 계약 방식은 쪼갠 고기 사이로 계약을 맺은 양쪽 당사자가 같이 지나가야 했습니다. 그런데 횃불 언약에서는 하나님께서 홀로 쪼갠 고기 사이로 지나가셨습니다. 그 이유는 인간이 타락 이후에 전적으로 무능한 존재가 되어, 전능하시고 거룩하신 하나님을 상대하여 언약을 체결할 자격을 상실했기 때문에, 하나님의 무한하신 긍휼과 자비와 사랑을 통하여 일방적으로 언약을 체결하신 것입니다.

이것이 바로 하나님의 먼저 사랑이요(요일 4:10, 19), 은혜입니다. 오늘날 우리의 구원도 각 사람의 행위나 업적이나 자격으로 말미암지 않고, 오직 하나님의 일방적 사랑과 은혜로 주어지는 것입니다(엡 2:8-10).

The Ratification of the Covenant of the Torch

Among the covenants of God established in Genesis, there are three that were given with visual signs that have a strong impact. These are the "covenant of the rainbow" that God made with Noah and his sons after the judgment of the flood, the "covenant of the ladder" thet God made with Jacob at Bethel, and the "covenant of the torch" that God made with Abraham in Genesis 15.

Among these three covenants, only the covenant of the torch involved a sacrifice offering as proof of the covenant (Gen 15:8-10). This offering is a foreshadowing of the redemptive work of Jesus Christ who would come in human form to be offered as a sacrifice for the salvation of the chosen people (John 1:29; 1 Cor 5:7).

An important characteristic of the covenant of the torch is the flaming torch, which represents God's presence and passed between the pieces of the offering (Gen 15:17). According to the customs of those times, both parties involved in a contract would have to pass between the pieces in this covenant. The reason is that man has fallen and become totally inept and incapable of entering into a covenant with the almighty and holy God. Thus, in His boundless compassion, mercy, and love, God entered into a unilateral covenant with His people. This is evident of God's love and grace because He loved us first (1 John 4:10, 19). Our salvation today rests upon God's unilateral love and grace, not upon our deeds, achievements, or merit (Eph 2:8-10).
